Grayson

Grayson, winner of the puppy adoption lottery, became an islander when he had just turned one.

Turns out we know an angel who happens to be a dear friend. This angel was living both on Daufuskie part-time and in the Atlanta area. She heard about a Weimaraner puppy who had just had surgery to remove a tennis ball he had eaten. Well, this angel went to meet this pup and took a funny video of him being so excited that he knocked over her husband as he leapt on him. This husband was my husband’s tennis partner. There were so many cues that made us want to drive over 5 hours to go meet him. We took one look at him and it was immediate. We knew he was part of our family. It was as if our prior Weimaraner, Bailey, was a relation, we had to take him home.

When we got him on the ferry to the island, he was so curious, especially with the birds and all the sounds and smells that were new to him. He was so excited to meet everyone, dogs and people alike!

Well, we each took our turn walking this boy every day, for hours, trying to wear him out (impossible!) and then would work with him on his dos and don’ts. Pretty soon, you’d see us riding our bicycles with him to make sure we could keep up on what was his daily happy place runs. He especially loved to go for runs on the beach, in and out of the water and fetching sticks or carrying long pieces of wood. If he had a superpower, it would be as an Olympic Pole Vaulter, the way he would sprint carrying pieces that were at times 10 feet long.

Grayson loves coming home after his runs. He is the ultimate Cookie Monster from Sesame Street. He waits by his jar and points with his nose, telling whoever walked him that it’s time for his treat NOW!

Now, almost ten years later, in just a few months, he will be turning eleven. So smart and knowledgeable about island life, he even lets us know when a storm is coming, when he goes to hide and cuddle in his favorite velvet chair.
